Herring Gull
The herring gull is one of the most iconic seabirds in the UK, frequently seen around Southend Pier. Known for their loud, laughing calls, they are often spotted scavenging for food or soaring gracefully over the water.
Adults are easily identified by their grey backs, white bodies, and distinctive yellow bills with a red spot. Juveniles look very different, with mottled brown plumage that transitions to the classic adult colors over several years.
Despite their abundance, herring gulls face population declines due to habitat loss and reduced food availability. They are a familiar sight year-round, adding life to the pier and estuary.
