Common Seal
Common seals, also known as harbour seals, are regular visitors to the Thames Estuary. These sleek marine mammals are known for their expressive faces and large, dark eyes. They are strong swimmers and skilled hunters, feeding on fish like flounder and sand eels. Common seals often haul out on mudflats or sandbanks to rest or bask in the sun.
Around Southend Pier, they are occasionally spotted swimming close to shore or lounging on exposed mudflats during low tide. Their playful behavior and distinctive appearance make them a favorite among wildlife enthusiasts.
