Black-Headed Gull

Black-Headed Gull

The black-headed gull is one of the most common birds around Southend Pier. Its summer plumage features a chocolate-brown head, turning white in winter with two small black spots resembling headphones.

These gulls are agile flyers, often seen gliding over the water or perched on the pier railings. They are opportunistic feeders, eating fish, insects, and scraps from visitors.

During winter, many migrate here from northern Europe, making them even more abundant. Their distinctive appearance and playful behavior make them a favorite among birdwatchers.
