We are very pleased to share our iconic pier has attracted over 24,000 visitors in January 2022!
The figures are nearly double those of December’s visitors and almost a third more than the previous January record and the best January attendance figure since records began 15 years ago.
January is typically lower in visitor numbers for our 1.33-mile pier due to unpredictable and harsh weather conditions, in addition to numbers being particularly low last year due to coronavirus restrictions.
It is a promising insight into visitor numbers, as this year it is predicted the pier will attract more new and returning guests, thanks to some exciting upgrades such as the long-awaited new, eco-friendly pier trains, due to be unveiled this season.
There will also be new public toilets and new restaurant service located within the Royal Pavilion building at the end of the pier.
Cllr Carole Mulroney, cabinet member for environment, culture, tourism and planning, said on the latest figures:
“We’ve had a record-breaking month for tourism to the pier last month and I envisage this will continue to grow throughout the year. I’d like to thank pier staff and those working on the pier upgrades for their continued hard work and dedication to improving one of our most iconic attractions. “Southend has a lot of fantastic upcoming projects and events, and I am sure that locals and those from further away will want to see what is in store. This year is a real celebration of Southend and a great opportunity to share our pride for our soon-to-be city with residents and guests alike.”
